I had a great first week. I learned how to do so much and I DID so much. I have been trained to do multiple jobs around Sandoway. This ranges from running the gift shop to preparing individualized meals for the animals. Yeah, I made some minor mistakes in terms of forgetting to give visitors wristbands and what not. However, I really think that I have learned how to correct these small errors and do a better job overall. I really enjoy what I’m doing. I haven’t been too overwhelmed yet, but that is probably because there has not been that many visitors. I really think that this week has been beneficial to me. I can use the training that the staff has given me over the course of the week to successfully complete the next couple. Everything that the staff told me was gonna happen inevitably did. Stuff like that turtle is aggressive so you need to wear protective gloves. He ended up biting the gloves in lieu of my fingers. Or something like changing the filters for all the aquarium tanks at Sandoway. The floor will get wet in the process so wipe it up as soon as possible. In this circumstance, I almost slipped but caught myself before I did too much damage. This has taught me to listen to the staff to the letter. Believe it or not, they know what they are talking about. The goal of this week was mainly focused on training so I know how to be an efficient and helpful volunteer. I think I successfully did just that. I now know how to take care of all the animals in almost every way. I can use the software that is used at the cash register for admissions and the gift shop. I can do handiwork like fixing up wooden aquarium bases. I can sit in the high 80-degree heat for an hour or two while painting and sanding. I can run the touch tank for little kids. I can tell people facts about the animals that Sandoway houses. I can fully clean every animal enclosure. I think that I am very ready in terms of knowledge and experience to burn through senior project. I’m so excited to do so! It’s all in a week's worth.

4/29/19 9:00pm 4 hours today 6 hours total Since I’m not working officially until Tuesday, I had to keep myself busy. I went to a Delray Beach town meeting that relates to my project. They discussed the city’s adoption of straw alternatives or ban them altogether. Some restaurants have avocado pit straws, which is exactly as it sounds. The best part is that it’s plant-based so it doesn’t end up harming the environment. The problem with that is that they tend to be an expensive option. Many local restaurants have vowed to use paper straws. I look forward to seeing the city’s progress over the course of this project and over the years to come.

The organization that has changed my life over the past several years. I will be going to Bali again after two years. We met to discuss logistics and stuff like that. I’m super excited to be traveling back to Bali this summer! I’ll get a good night’s sleep for a hard day of work!

5/01/10 6:45pm 8 hours today 22 hours total Today was my first full day volunteering at Sandoway. I did so much in the eight hours I spent there. I learned how to manage the diets and meals of all of the animals living there. I learned how to change filters in the aquarium tanks. I began a large project of sanding and painting a base for a giant tank that they’ll be using. I checked inventory for the gift shop and so much more. I also focused on interacting with visitors and teaching them about all the great knowledge that Sandoway has to offer. I can’t wait to learn and work more with this amazing place.
