Blog 4/30

4/30/19 9:10pm 8 hours today 14 hours total Today I had a meeting with the director of education, Evan Orellana. I also met with Amanda Clough who runs the volunteering at Sandoway. We discussed a plan for my volunteer work and what I’ll be up to. For about a week, I will be helping Evan with jobs around Sandoway. After that, I will be running the cash register in the gift shop. I am told that I will also be greeting and welcoming families to the center. This means teaching and talking about the different animals at Sandoway. This includes all sorts of handiwork like painting, lifting, hammering, and whatnot. My first official day starts tomorrow morning at 9am sharp.

4/29/19 9:00pm 4 hours today 6 hours total Since I’m not working officially until Tuesday, I had to keep myself busy. I went to a Delray Beach town meeting that relates to my project. They discussed the city’s adoption of straw alternatives or ban them altogether. Some restaurants have avocado pit straws, which is exactly as it sounds. The best part is that it’s plant-based so it doesn’t end up harming the environment. The problem with that is that they tend to be an expensive option. Many local restaurants have vowed to use paper straws. I look forward to seeing the city’s progress over the course of this project and over the years to come.

4/28/19 5:05pm 2 hours today 2 hours total Unfortunately, Sandoway Discovery Center couldn’t get me to start working until Tuesday. In preparation, I planned a meeting time with the volunteer organizer. I also coordinated a meeting between myself and my mentor, Nick. Today I drove over there not realizing they weren’t open until later. I’m really excited about this project. So excited, in fact, that I had to go surfing to get some of my energy out. It’s looking like a great start to the last chapter of my Proctor career. I look forward to working with Sandoway throughout this time.
